Not a Movie Review

I started this several weeks ago and stopped because I wasn’t sure what colors I wanted her to be dancing in and around, and whether or not she should have a skirt or some other type of costume. I tried a maroon background and wondered what the purple with blue would look like. If you know me, I am highly skilled at mismatching colors.

Then last night, I decided at the last minute to get out of my apartment, be the creepy older dude at the movie theatre sinking down in those adjustable chairs, and go see West Side Story. I thought it was impossible for a remake to be better than the original.

I’m not a movie critic, and I predict the corporate criticism will either reflect on the fact that this movie will not make the big money and “flop” that way, or try to praise it into the upcoming awards season. (Speaking of awards, Rita Moreno should be nominated for one of the golden statues that millionaires give other millionaires in the first few months of a year. Her presence in the film is not just a cameo!) I don’t know how to review a movie like this one, other than to say it is a work of art.

Earlier this year, I sat across from someone who was talking about a mutual friend of ours and he said that he didn’t think he was all that handsome or attractive, but could be more attractive if he spent time buying some new clothes or getting his hair cut a different way.

I countered his comments knowing what kind of impact this bad dresser friend of ours had on me personally, not so much by disagreeing, but just stating what I thought was true for me. “He’s a work of art to me. Because he makes me feel something, you know? Some people are just works of art.” That’s what I can say about this movie. I loved it. It’s a surprising work of art worth seeing, even if you don’t like musicals.
